Planting Lily Bulbs

When to Plant Lily Bulbs

Plant your lilies in the spring when the soil is workable but not muddy.

Plant your lilies in the fall a month before the first killing frost when the soil is still workable.

Where to Plant Lily Bulbs

Before planting your lily bulbs, select a sunny spot with well-drained soil. While lilies thrive in full sun, they can also tolerate some shade.

How to Plant Lily Bulbs

Lilies look best when planted in groups of three to five bulbs, spaced about 12 inches apart. Small bulb varieties should be planted 2 to 4 inches deep, while larger varieties should go 6 inches deep. Space each group about 3 to 4 feet apart to allow for full growth. Keep the soil moist, watering thoroughly once a week rather than doing light waterings. During hot months, monitor the soil to prevent it from drying out, and water as needed.

How to Care for Lilies

Mulching your lily garden in fall and winter is recommended. Remove the mulch in spring as the lily stalks emerge. If the soil needs improvement, fertilize in early spring with a 5-10-10 fertilizer. Remove dead flower heads promptly to redirect energy back to the bulb for next season, but avoid removing leaves, as this can affect next year’s blooms. When cutting lilies for arrangements, try to leave some foliage to help ensure the bulbs can rebloom. It’s also a good idea to dig up and divide lily bulbs every three to four years, as they multiply. Replant them in new patterns or extend your existing lily garden.
