Helichrysum (Helichrysum Bracteatum Purple-Red)
Strawflower is a terrific drought tolerant annual! It easily establishes from Helichrysum seeds, and produces lovely flowers from late spring until fall frosts. As an added bonus, the flowers can be cut and dried and made into dried floral arrangements. The flowers hold their color very well after drying giving the additional name for this flower of Everlasting Daisy. To dry, pick flowers when lower 2 - 4 rows of petals are just beginning to open. Remove foliage, bunch loosely and hang upside down in a warm, airy place.
Helichrysum Strawflower plants are considered to be medium to fine textured plants which can grow up to 40 inches high. Helichrysum Everlasting flowers are about 2 1/2 inches in diameter, double and daisy-like in appearance. The true flower is surrounded by colorful, stiff, modified leaves. Sow the flower seed in spring after frost season has ended directly outdoors into prepared soil. For earlier blooms, sow Strawflower seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before planting time. Transplant young Helichrysum plants into the flower garden, pinching back to encourage compact growth. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage flowering. Remove plants after frost.
