  • Flowering time: July to August

This is a double-flowered arrowhead variety, with slender, bright-green, arrow-shaped leaves, and pure white fluffy pom-pom flowers. It is more striking than the native British arrowhead - in addition to the double blooms it is up sooner in spring, has leaves that are much more defined and angular, and which last longer on the plant. Like the native arrowhead, it grows each year from an underground tuber (the 'potato', see picture). It appears above the soil as a green spike in April to May, and then grows fast, to flower in mid to late summer. After flowering, the plant dies back. Underground, each plant is making two or three tubers for the following year. Sometimes these will escape from the pot, coming up next spring somewhere else in the pond, but in our experience this isn't common. It will overwinter as these round tubers, with a growing spike, but without leaves or roots, from autumn until the following spring.

Sagittaria trifolia 'flore pleno', commonly known as Double-flowered Arrowhead, is a captivating aquatic perennial prized for its unique foliage and charming double blooms. This plant species features arrow-shaped leaves arranged in a rosette formation, emerging from creeping rhizomes that spread across the water's surface. The leaves are typically green with distinct veins, providing an attractive backdrop for the delicate flowers.

One of the most appealing features of Sagittaria trifolia 'flore pleno' is its double-flowered blooms, which add a touch of elegance and whimsy to ponds, water gardens, and wetland areas. The flowers emerge on tall, slender stems above the foliage and boast multiple layers of petals, creating a stunning visual effect reminiscent of water lilies. The blossoms come in shades of white, pink, or lavender, attracting attention and admiration from both humans and pollinators.

For optimal growth and flowering, Sagittaria trifolia 'flore pleno' should be planted in a sunny to partially shaded location with shallow water, such as pond margins or boggy areas. Planting can be done in the spring or early summer, once the threat of frost has passed and water temperatures have warmed. Rhizomes should be planted horizontally in the soil, with the growing points facing upward, and spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart to allow for natural expansion and growth.

Sagittaria trifolia 'flore pleno' typically begins flowering in mid to late summer, depending on the climate and location. The double-flowered blooms emerge above the water's surface and continue to appear throughout the summer months, adding beauty and charm to aquatic landscapes. Deadheading spent flowers can prolong the blooming period and encourage the production of new blooms.

In summary, Sagittaria trifolia 'flore pleno' is a delightful aquatic perennial prized for its unique foliage and double-flowered blooms. Whether planted in ponds, water features, or bog gardens, its elegant appearance and long-lasting flowers make it a standout choice for adding beauty and interest to aquatic landscapes.
